In order to accelerate the energy transition both at the level of individuals and businesses, the company GRDF (Gaz Réseau Distribution France) has launched a new generation counter called Gazpar since 2016.

This device communicative and intelligent must replace the 11 million meters with manual reading in homes and establishments connected to the company's natural gas distribution networks.

How does this new counter work? What are the advantages for SMEs? And what is the cost of installing it?

SirEnergies explains everything you need to know about Gazpar, the new metering device.

Gazpar, the communicating gas meter

Gazpar is a Communicating meter deployed by GRDF as part of the application of the energy transition law enacted in August 2015.

It is an intelligent metering device that optimizes the measurement and transmission of gas consumption data in businesses and homes.

This gas device is the equivalent of the Linky meter for electricity.

Do not hesitate to consult our article to know more about the Linky meter.

How does the communicating gas meter work?

The new so-called communicating gas meter was designed in a process of modernization and automation. To do this, he uses a technology” Smart grid ” offering a radio signal reading system. This allows the GRDF network team to consult your consumption data remotely.

This mode of operation takes place in 4 steps:

  • The automatic recording of daily consumption;
  • The transmission (twice a day) of the data collected to a concentrator via the 169 MHz frequency;
  • Receiving and processing consumption records by the gas supplier's information systems;
  • The publication of consumption data in the customer area of each consumer.

To perform this function, the Gazpar meter uses a lithium battery, which allows it to record daily consumption even in the event of a power outage.

The advantages of the Gazpar meter for professionals

With its intelligent technology, the Gazpar meter offers several advantages to the consumer, regardless of whether it is an association, an SME or an individual.

Better monitoring of gas consumption

Thanks to its communicating technology, the new GRDF network meter provides better visibility on daily gas consumption. This is a real asset for professionals: businesses and SMEs.

They can now consult their consumption data and follow its evolution over time. This is done via The GRDF client area which also makes it possible to set a certain consumption threshold to better control the use of natural gas within your company.

It is an effective way to optimize costs and save money on your bills.

Invoicing based on real consumption

With the meters currently in use (those with manual reading), the rates applied to the bills are calculated on the basis of estimated consumption. It may therefore happen that you pay a cost that is slightly higher than your actual consumption.

This problem no longer arises with smart meters. This new counting device makes it possible to bill customers on the basis of their actual consumption.

This is due to the fact that The Gazpar meter systematically transmits data twice a day using radio frequency.

Promotes the energy transition

The communicating gas meter also contributes to the energy transition in companies, associations and SMEs.

Indeed, by having direct access to your usage data, you can easily identify consumption peaks and determine their cause. The Gazpar meter can therefore help you become aware of an energy problem and to undertake renovation work : reinforcement of thermal insulation, replacement of collective water heaters, improvement of the heating system...

This type of ecological intervention will optimize your energy consumption.

Improving the quality of interventions

Since meter readings can be done remotely with the Gazpar device, GRDF technicians will now be freed from this task. The national supplier can then mobilize this workforce on other services and operations. This improves the quality and speed of interventions.

Installing the Gazpar meter

The deployment of the new Gazpar metering device began in May 2017 and will end in 2022. The installation of this smart meter is automatic for the 11 million customers using GRDF's gas network.

How does the installation of the communicating gas meter take place?

The installation of the Gazpar meter takes place in several stages.

To start, you will receive an email between 30 and 45 days before installation. This message informs you of the arrival of the meter in your municipality of residence and indicates the name of the company mandated to take care of the installation.

After this first step, a new notification (email or letter) will be sent to you within 15 days before installation. This indicates the day and time the technical team will visit your home.

Two days before installing the device, a text message or a confirmation email will be sent to you as a reminder.

On D-day, the technical team installs your meter in about 30 minutes and gives you an intervention notice.

If your gas meter is located outside, you do not have to be present at the time of the intervention. However, in case the meter is located inside, your presence is mandatory. To find out when the new gas meter will be installed in your municipality, go to the GRDF supplier's website.

Is it mandatory to install the Gazpar smart meter?

The installation of an intelligent metering device is mandatory for all buildings (professionals and individuals) connected to the natural gas network. It is therefore not possible to oppose it.

In fact, gas meters belong to local authorities and not to customers. They delegate its management to the company GRDF. Thus, when the company's technical team wants to replace or repair a meter, it is entitled to do so even without the customer's authorization.

However, if it is not possible to legally refuse the installation of the Gazpar device, you can postpone the installation according to your availability if the meter is located inside. This is done via a registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt that indicates your temporary unavailability to the manager. However, be careful! It is not possible to postpone the installation beyond the date of completion of the overall deployment of the new meter.

How much does it cost to install a Gazpar meter?

The installation of the Gazpar meter is completely free for all consumers during the deployment period provided for by law. In other words, you will not have to pay any fees for installing this device until 2022.

Beyond this period, the installation of the meter may be chargeable. This cost will include technician travel expenses, installation time, and hardware.

In summary, the new gas meter is designed to ensure better management of consumption in businesses and households. More efficient and more functional than the meters currently used, this metering device is committed to an ecological approach and allows users to optimize their energy consumption.

The answers to your questions

Why change energy suppliers?

Changing suppliers can allow you to benefit from more competitive prices, adapted services or better contractual conditions. Thanks to sourcing, change is happening without interruption of supply.

What taxes are particularly relevant to manufacturers?

The industry is concerned by TICFE, TICGN and other contributions that may represent an important part of invoices. Sirenergies identifies cases of exemption and accompanies the procedures to benefit from them.

Which taxes are particularly relevant for farms?

Farms are subject to taxes such as TICFE or TICGN. Sirenergies verifies their application, identifies cases of exemption and accompanies the procedures to reduce the tax burden.

Who can benefit from optimizing invoices and taxes?

All businesses, from SMEs to large organizations, can benefit from this service. Les local authorities also find it a lever to better control their budgets.

How to properly define your subscribed power?

The subscribed power must be calculated according to the consumption profile and uses (heating, industrial processes, tertiary equipment). One fine analysis makes it possible to ensure the adequacy between real need and contract.

What are the energy challenges for manufacturers?

Industrial companies consume large volumes of energy for their production processes. They have to deal with the volatility of prizes, multi-site management and specific taxes. Controlling costs is essential to remain competitive.

What are the consequences of overpowering?

Exceeding capacity leads to financial penalties and can impact the size of the contract. Adjust the correctly subscribed power makes it possible to avoid these additional costs.

What is the point of following Spot & Forward prices?

This makes it possible to choose the right time to contract, secure your budgets and anticipate increases.

What are the energy challenges of the agricultural sector?

Farms must deal with high seasonal needs (greenhouse heating, irrigation, storage) and high volatility of prizes. Controlling these costs is essential to maintain profitability and secure the business.

What are the main taxes applicable?

Among the taxes include TICFE, TICGN, CTA, CJA and TURPE. They represent a significant part of the bill and vary according to consumption profiles. Understanding them well is essential to optimize costs.

How to optimize taxes and contributions?

Tertiary companies are concerned by taxes such as TICFE or TICGN. Sirenergies checks the accuracy of invoices, identifies possible exemptions, and helps correct errors to sustainably reduce costs.

How do I read an electricity or gas bill?

One invoice consists of several elements: consumption, supplier share, taxes and contributions. The analysis of each line makes it possible to identify possible errors and to check the consistency with the signed contract.

How do I get a tax exemption?

Some businesses may obtain a partial or total exemption from the TICFE or the TICGN, depending on their activity and energy intensity. The support of an expert makes it possible to identify the eligibility criteria and to put together the file.

How to optimize the taxes and contributions of a community?

Communities are subject to taxes such as TICFE or TICGN. Sirenergies analyzes invoices, identifies exemption possibilities and fixes possible errors to reduce the tax burden.

What are the challenges for tertiary companies?

Tertiary companies must manage their energy costs while guaranteeing the comfort of users (offices, shops, services). Consumption is often linked to heating, air conditioning and lighting, which requires precise monitoring to avoid budgetary excesses.

What are the advantages of sourcing?

Sourcing offers better visibility on the market and promotes the selection of competitive contracts. It helps to reduce the risks associated with price volatility and to optimize the energy budget.

What are the concrete benefits for tertiary companies?

Les profits include a direct reduction in bills, strengthened budgetary forecasting and better control of consumption. Businesses gain visibility and efficiency thanks to adapted tools.

What is energy sourcing?

Sourcing consists in identifying and analysing the offers of several electricity and gas suppliers. This approach makes it possible to obtain contracts adapted to the consumption profile and budgetary constraints of the company.

Why launch an energy tender?

What is the difference between €/MWh and kWh?

The €/MWh is a price unit used in wholesale markets, while kWh is the unit visible on your bills.
