In the current energy landscape, it is difficult to ignore biomass. Yesterday energy relegated to the past, it is now combined with the present.

Following the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP 21) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), France has made commitments to reach carbon neutrality in 2050, and committed itself to a trajectory defined in the framework of the National Low Carbon Strategy (SNBC).

ADEME, through the Chaleur Fund, supports local authorities in the implementation of renewable heat projects, in particular biomass energy. Similarly, as part of the industrial recovery plan, ADEME has launched an industry decarbonization fund, which is being implemented by investment aid through BCIAT (Biomasse Chaleur Industrie Agriculture et Tertiaire) calls for projects (Biomasse Chaleur Industrie Agriculture et Tertiaire).

Over the past 12 years, the Chaleur Fund has helped more than 6,000 renewable energy and recovery (EnR&R) installations thanks to 2.6 billion euros in aid, having generated 9.4 billion euros in investments.

SirEnergies therefore invites you today to take a closer look at biomass to know exactly what we are talking about.

Why is biomass a renewable energy?

Firewood, the original primary energy

Since the discovery of fire in prehistory, Biomass Is the oldest form of energy used by humans.

In the 18th century, “firewood” was the main fuel used in homes for heating and cooking. From then on, its use would become intensive until the first industrial revolution.

The arrival of oil will then make you forget about biomass, which will only reappear in 1970 with the first awareness of the risks of pollution generated by fossil fuels.

Since then, wood energy has diversified its uses and is now used in boiler rooms to produce heat and in heating installations. cogeneration to simultaneously produce electricity and heat.

Biomass on Earth

Globally, biomass represents 1 000 billion tons distributed between forests, oceans and lakes. It is estimated that of the 160 billion tons per year of dry biomass used, 50% come from forests and 36% from the oceans.

The forest area is estimated at 30% of the Earth's land, which is equivalent to just under 40 million square kilometers or about 5,500 soccer fields. This makes wood or biomass a very important renewable energy source.

Today Biomass represents 59% of global renewable energies and makes it possible on average to save the equivalent of 350,000 tons of oil and to avoid the emission of 750,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

...

The CO2 emissions for the production and transport of one ton of wood fuel amount to 28.6 kg of which:
