Lisbon, July 28, 2025 (AFP) - On Monday, the Portuguese government presented a 400 million euro plan to strengthen the security of the country's electrical system in order to avoid new megapnes, three months after the outage that affected the entire Iberian Peninsula.

The implementation of this plan, composed of 31 measures, will make it possible to “strengthen the operational security of the network”, said the Minister of the Environment, Maria da Graça Carvalho, at a press conference.

“These measures represent an investment of 400 million euros”, but not everything will “be reflected in the tariffs”, assured the minister, specifying that part of the financing will come from European funds.

Among the main measures is the development of electricity storage, in particular through the installation of batteries, with a call for tenders expected by 2026.

The government is also planning some 25 million euros to strengthen the resilience of essential infrastructures, such as hospitals, as well as to modernize electrical network control systems.

Portugal is also studying the possibility of an interconnection with Morocco.

“There were contacts between the Foreign Ministers” of the two countries, a contact that was still “very preliminary”, however, indicated the minister.

“We could consider the possibility of connecting to one of the existing projects. A new project, starting from scratch, would certainly be very expensive,” she estimated.

At the end of June, Spain also unveiled a series of measures aimed at strengthening the stability of the electrical network and avoiding new megapas, by focusing on storage, strengthening supervision or even the acceleration of renewable energy projects.
