Several important pieces of information related to decisions taken by the French government came out last night:

  • The ceiling of the ARENH has been raised 120 TWh for the last nine months of 2022, starting on 1 April of this year;
  • The price of ARENH has increased from €42/MWh to 46.20 €/MWh. Note that it is not known whether it is applied to the entire 120 TWh or only to the 20 TWh of ARENH supplement;
  • La TICFE unto €0.50/MWh for all businesses as of February 1, 2022.

The CRE will have work to do in the coming hours to mediate this change with regard to energy suppliers who have undergone a Clipping record this year. Two options: either the establishment of a new counter, or the 20% increase in Arenh fees for each supplier.

As this is a measure qualified as “exceptional emergency” by the European Commission, the raising of the ARENH ceiling Only applies to the year 2022. So is this the starting point for negotiations for 2023? To be continued...

Still, this is very good news for French consumers and businesses in order to maintain Electricity prices which have been facing an unprecedented increase in several months. Moreover, this decision will make it possible to ease tensions on the wholesale electricity market.
